Phase One, the Narthex Expansion is well on the way and will be obvious within just a few weeks, Phase Two, the new parish hall building is close behind.

Over the last several months we have attended many meetings with our architects, engineers and general contractor as well as St. Joseph’s staff and parishioners to make sure we get not only the best design for our ministries’ needs but one that is practical and affordable. We have also been in touch with an interior decorator and the same company that produced the labyrinth in the chapel at the Duncan Center. Soil borings and perk tests have been performed and an “As Built” survey was done. Our design for the narthex is ready to present to the city for approval. 75% drawings have been produced and will be going to the various sub-contractors for bids. We expect to have Building Permit Approval for the Narthex Expansion by early August and start construction shortly after. Along with the new narthex and bathrooms will come some changes in the circle and landscaping in front of the church, the driveway and parking on the south side.

The parish hall project has been developing in parallel but a couple of months later than the narthex. Many of the things we are doing will apply to both areas. We plan to submit the parish hall construction documents to the city in late September and receive the permit by mid November but probably won’t start construction until after Christmas. The new building should be ready by the summer of 2010.

One aspect that is particularly exciting is the prospect of making this an environmentally responsible building. This was one of the Presiding Bishop’s concerns voiced during her visit to South Florida a few months ago. Some things require only a decision with no additional up front cost like solar hot water or the proper placement of widows and choice of materials, but still produce a savings. Other items we are considering like a photovoltaic array on the roof and LED lighting require an initial expense but have a reasonable payback period and will produce great savings later as well as making us good stewards of the world that God has entrusted us with.

Today, we are well on our way to making our leap of faith into the foundation of our future. As of the end of June 2008 we have 223 committed parishioners for the “Make Room at the Inn” Capital Campaign for a total pledge amount of $2,905,309. To date over $550,000 in stocks and cash have been deposited to the Capital Campaign account. A tremendous start given we are only a few months into our three year journey! All of us at Saint Joseph’s should take this time to express our gratitude to the Lord for providing us a place to put our faith in him and one another. These new facilities that we are about to build will come at a time of great need for us and our community.

For questions on stock contrubutions or any aspect of giving to this campaign please contact me at JeffREM@bellsouth.net or call 561-732-3060.
